Ecclesbourne School Reach National Semi-Final in Memorable Knight-Stokes Cup Champion.
After winning the Derbyshire competition, the team progressed to claim the Midlands regional title, earning a place in the national semi-final at the iconic Headingley Cricket Ground. Despite ultimately losing to Penistone School, the campaign was a tremendous achievement and showcased the strength of girls’ cricket in Derbyshire.
Reflecting on the journey, teacher Simon Carnwell said:
“Our U15 Girls’ Cricket team enjoyed an unforgettable Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup campaign, reaching the National Semi-Final at Headingley and establishing themselves among the top four state-school girls’ cricket teams in England.
“The experience went far beyond cricket. The team developed resilience, teamwork, leadership, confidence and the ability to perform under pressure – qualities that will benefit them throughout their lives. School sport plays a vital role in the holistic development of young people, and this campaign showed the powerful impact it can have on aspirations, wellbeing and personal growth.”
Simon also highlighted the importance of community support in helping the team succeed.
“We are grateful to the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation for supporting opportunities that make the game more accessible and inclusive. We are also so fortunate to receive incredible support from our local clubs, particularly Duffield Cricket Club.
“Duffield Cricket Club generously provide free use of its facilities for our boys and girls and their dedicated coaches have supported our campaign up and down the country, sharing their enthusiasm and wisdom with me and the team.
“Partnerships between schools and clubs are essential if cricket is to remain a game that inspires and develops all children, not just those with the greatest advantages. We are immensely proud of this group and hope their achievements will encourage more girls across Derbyshire to get involved in the game and discover the many benefits that cricket can offer both on and off the field.”
Lilia who score 52* in the semi final, also reflected on the unforgettable experience:
“It was a brilliant opportunity to allow more young girls to get involved in cricket and develop their skills. It was an amazing experience being able to play at such iconic venues (Repton, Oakham, Rugby and Headingley!). Most of all it was brilliant to play with a team with such great passion and potential.
“The competition will encourage a wider range of players to the game. The professionalism of the match officials further made the experience more memorable and exciting!”
